ANPL would love to have teens using our library for social meetings and community events. Have an idea for teen night? Let us know and we will do what we can to make it happen. Want to volunteer? We have openings. But for us to serve you, we need to know what you want, so stop by or email treed@antownship.ca and share your ideas! 

Youth Advisory Group

We are looking for a group of community focused youth aged 12 – 18 to form our Youth Advisory Group (YAG). YAG will serve in an advisory capacity informing ANPL on the interests of our local youth and teens to help guide our programs and services. The collaborative approach will help ensure our library is an inclusive and welcoming space for youth and teens in our community. Youth Book Club

Do you love to read? Do you love to share your ideas and listen to other perspectives? If yes, come join our youth book club! We meet every other month to chat about our latest book choice (chosen as a group). For more information or to register email treed@antownship.ca.  

Volunteen

Teens are an important part of the Asphodel-Norwood Public Library Volunteen team. Volunteering is a great way for teens to get insight into various Library careers, receive volunteer hours, or simply to make a positive impact in the community.

What is Volunteen?

If you’re a teenager interested in volunteer service, then ANPL Volunteen is the program for you! Volunteen is a great way for teenagers to find ongoing volunteer opportunities both during the school year and during the summer months.

ANPL Teen Volunteer Requirements

• 12 to 18 years of age.
• Minimum three-month commitment – six months or more preferred.
• Regular schedule is required for many positions (weekly or every other week).

A limited number of volunteer positions are available for teens each year. Students are advised to apply for volunteer openings early in the school year.

Here’s a list of online resources to help you with homework and assignments.

• Cliffnotes offers study guides and literature notes to help you make sense of your English class readings.
• InnerBody shows the different systems of the body on a virtual model and gives the option of studying them in 2D or 3D form.
• SparkNotes provides essay topic help and various study guides.
• Math.com has charts, tables, formulas and more to help with your trickiest math problems. There are also practice quizzes and games.
• The Physics Classroom offers basic physics concepts and a chance to complete practice quizzes.
• World Bank Blogs focuses on global issues that are about, or of interest to, youth. Topics include employment of young people in developing countries, government concerns, gender equality, and more.
• WorldBook Online Student Edition offers an encyclopedia, dictionary, atlas, homework help, study aids, and curriculum guides

If you are looking for help making a budget, getting your driver’s license, or applying to college, browse the sites below.

• DriveTest provides all the info you need about what you need to get your driver’s license, writing your test, and more.
• G1 Online Practice Test  has actual test questions you’d find on a written G1 test. There are several different version of the test so you can practice with different questions.
• Kids Help Phone Online provides free, anonymous counseling for anything you want to talk about.  You can also search for questions and answers other teenagers have asked.
• Peterborough Youth Services offers links for various services and that are beneficial for a teen’s health and wellness. Included are Big Brothers and Sisters of Peterborough, Family and Youth Clinic, Kawartha Food Share, Youth Emergency Shelter, and more.
• OntarioColleges provides a list of all the colleges and programs offered in Ontario, as well as the portal for applying.
• Ontario Universities’ Application Centre provides a list of all universities and programs offered in Ontario, as well as the portal for applying.
• SchoolFinder allows you to search for any post secondary school or program, both in Canada and abroad.

Want to start a book club or get feedback on your short story? These are the links for you!

• 20 Books Every Teen Should Read is pretty self explanatory, and features books such as Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne and Wurthering Heights by Emily Bronte.
• Goodreads is a website that lets you browse for books to add to your reading list, helps you keep track of books you have already read, shows reviews, and offers online book clubs specifically for teenagers.
• LitLovers has ideas for starting an in person book club, including theme ideas, menu suggestions, discussion questions and more. There are also “courses” you can take online for free that challenge the way you read books.
• Young Writer’s Society is an online forum for teens to share their original stories and novels, and get feedback from other members.
• AudioSYNC is a free summer audiobook program for teens, in association with AudioFile Magazine and OverDrive.
