Encyclopedias

  • The Canadian Encyclopedia – the full text of The Canadian Encyclopedia and its related resources has been made available online by the Historica Foundation as a public service since 1999.
  • Encyclopedia Britannica – although this is a subscription encyclopedia, there is a lot of content that can be accessed for free.
  • WorldBook Online – offers an encyclopedia, dictionary, atlas, homework help, study aids, and curriculum guides. Designed for students, but accessible for anyone with a library card.

Dictionary, Thesaurus, Almanac, Quotations

Frequently the websites that offer one of these, offer more.

  • Dictionary.com – licensed content from over 15 trusted and established sources including Random House and Harper Collins. Dictionary.com also includes a thesaurus, encyclopedia references, quotations, and a translator, as well as other useful tools.
  • Onelook.com – searches over 1,000 dictionaries from a single search box.
  • Infoplease is a one-stop resource centre for dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia, atlas, and almanac questions.
  • CIA World Factbook provides information on the history, people, government, economy, geography, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues for 267 world entities.
